Introduction This lesson plan is directed at ninth and tenth grade
geography classes and is beneficial for investigating the contemporary
production of goods by the countries in The software program used in this lesson plan, Asia Inspirer, allows students to
conduct a scavenger hunt throughout the countries in Subject/Lesson: Geography/Asian Continent Grade Level: 9/10 Outcomes: Students will locate and connect various Asian countries according to their production of manmade and natural goods while trying to gain the most points from bonus questions and travel logs to priority countries. Focus: Strengthening student knowledge of the
modern geography of Standards: 3. People, Places and Environments; 7. Production, Distribution, and Consumption; 9. Global Connections Key Question for the Lesson: How does geographic location support or delineate from the production of goods? Objectives: Students will be able to: 1.) recognize
and name countries throughout 2.) work in groups to complete two scavenger hunts for different goods while collecting the maximum amount of points 3.) organize a plan for visiting countries with the highest production of the good being hunted 4.) asses the positive and negative features of the software they used 5.) evaluate how well the group worked together 6.) develop their own scavenger hunt within another continent for a good of their choice Materials: Pens, pencils, paper, computers, computer screen projector, Asia Inspirer downloaded to all classroom computers, Asia travel logs, Asia maps, entry slips, job sheet, group evaluation sheet and continent maps. Pre-Assessment: This lesson focuses on geography and students should be
familiar with the continents, their names and where they are located. The lesson before this is a modeling lesson
of Asia Inspirer, so students have
already been introduced to the program.
The whole class conducted a scavenger hunt to witness how the software
works. All the computers in the
classroom have LESSON PROCEDURE Bellwork: Students will enter the classroom and will take an entry slip from the table at the front of the room on which they will answer the question on the board: “What goods are produced in Asian countries? What do you think are the top three most produced goods from this continent?” These entry slips are to be completed, then folded in half so I can collect them. Initiation ● Teacher will ask the class to volunteer to state what they answered for their board question. T and students will discuss the goods that they think are produced in Asian countries, as well as natural goods that are created on this continent. ● T informs the class they will use Asia Inspirer to learn more about the goods and natural resources produced within the Asian continent. Class will be reminded of the software program and that it is conducted as a scavenger hunt, and bonus questions are asked throughout the program and are worth extra points. 5-7 minutes Development of
Lesson: ● T will divide the class into pre-determined groups (4 or five total) and these groups will move to a computer to use for the class for their scavenger hunts. T advises that each group must complete two scavenger hunts. ● T will distribute the “Job Sheet” which lists the job title for each group member (recorder, moderator, timekeeper and computer operator), and informs the groups that each member must be signed up for a job for this task as this is part of the group grade. T tells the groups that after class they will evaluate how well each group member carried out their tasks, and how well all group members participating in creating the travel log. ● T distributes travel log sheets and the map packet to each group-reminds groups that their hunt needs to be developed away from the computer so all group members can discuss their scavenger hunt plan. ● T reminds the groups that the travel log MUST be completed for both hunts; it will be passed in as part of the group grade, as well as the ‘Job Sheet.’ Group scavenger hunt points are recorded and kept by the computer and T states she will retrieve that information after class. ● Groups assign a job to each member, then hand in the ‘Job Sheet’ to the T. ● Groups then may begin using the software and learn what their first scavenger hunt item will be. Groups work at tables (away from the computer) to map out their travel plans, listing on their travel logs the country order that they will visit. ● Groups continue working on the Asia scavenger hunts and once they successfully complete two, they bring their travel log sheets and group ‘Job Sheet’ to the T. 30-35 minutes Closure: ● T collects groups’ ‘Job Sheets’ and travel logs ● T distributes the group self-evaluation forms ● T and S’s discuss their likes and dislikes about
the software. T may prompt discussion
by asking, “Do you think the bonus questions were helpful as you entered your
hunt information on the computer?” T
is working for an open discussion about ● T explains the homework assignment and answers any class questions. 5-7 minutes Homework: ● S’s will complete a group critique worksheet mentioning what worked well in their group and what could have been done differently-due tomorrow. ● S’s also will create their own scavenger hunt on another continent. This will be due in one week and continents will be chosen tomorrow. S’s are encouraged to become familiar with other continents by reviewing them tonight. In class tomorrow, S's will chose a continent out of a hat and then may begin creating their scavenger hunt. Assessment: ● Groups will be evaluated on how well they work together
as a group (taking into account the self evaluation sheets they individually
complete and the travel log) and the grade will take into account the number
of points groups earned with the ● Informal/ongoing assessment: class participation and effort on the entry slip ● S’s will be individually graded on their homework of creating their own hunt for a single item throughout another continent.
