THE
MUNGER LECTURE FEATURES SCHOLAR FROM THE CZECH REPUBLIC PRESENTING
“ETHICS IN VIDEOGAMES” ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16: As part of
International Education Week, the Philosophy department is hosting
the Munger Lecture featuring Daniel Riha, Ph.D., assistant professor
at Charles University Prague, who will discuss "Ethics in Videogames:
New Praxis for a New Medium." Dr. Riha will offer a multimedia
presentation on a variety of ethical issues in controversial commercial
videogames such as: JFK Reloaded, Under Siege, and September
12th. These titles address serious concerns which include: modern
warfare, terrorism, globalization, and urban violence. What roles
do players engage in when participating? What are the ethical responsibilities
of players or creators of these games? Do such games promote or merely
reflect social values?
The Munger Lecture in Ethics is sponsored by an endowed fund given
by Saint Joseph College alumna Mary V. Munger '39 and is intended
to encompass the whole spectrum of contemporary ethics including theoretical
issues, religious perspectives, personal morality, social ethics,
and ethical issues in the professions. This event will take
place on Monday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m. in The Crystal Room, Mercy
Hall. The lecture is free of charge and open to the public.
