GLOBAL GENDER-BASED HEALTH CARE FOR WOMEN LECTURE SERIES
CONTINUES ON NOVEMBER 10: The World Affairs Councils of
Connecticut, Western Michigan and North Carolina and Saint Joseph
College in West Hartford, Conn. are partnering in a significant and
timely research and advocacy project sponsored by Pfizer on Global
Gender-Based Health Care for Women. The final lecture of this
comprehensive four-part series is featured below:

QUEENES COMPANYE PRODUCTION OF SOPHIE TREADWELL’S
MACHINAL - NOVEMBER 12, 13, 14 (at the University of Hartford’s
Auerbach Auditorium) & NOVEMBER 19, 20, 21 (at The Bruyette
Athenaeum’s Hoffman Auditorium): This 1928 expressionist work
is based on an actual murder trial and examines how the societal norms
of early 20th century America made it nearly impossible for a woman to
realize her human potential. Will working-class Helen escape a dead-end
job, find love, and finally embrace life or will the machine win?
• Produced in conjunction with the University of Hartford’s
Dramatis Personae, performances Thursday through Saturday,
November 12, 13, and 14 will take place at 8:00 p.m. in the University
of Hartford’s Auerbach Auditorium. Tickets for these three
performances are available at the door only. • Performances
on Thursday and Friday, November 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday,
November 21 at 8:00 p.m. will take place in The Bruyette Athenaeum's
Hoffman Auditorium. Note: The performance on November 20 will

TUITION EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - SUBMIT LOTTERY
APPLICATION FORM TO THE OFFICE OF HUMAN RESOURCES BY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER
13, 2009: Through the Tuition Exchange Scholarship Program, and
on a limited basis, Saint Joseph College can authorize applications for
tuition remission at participating colleges for full-time undergraduate
sons/daughters of employees who have been full-time employees at
SJC for at least 12 months immediately prior to the date of application.
The number of
authorizations (exports) allowed depends on the number of students Saint
Joseph College accepts (imports) through the program. SJC will
authorize two Tuition Exchange Scholarship applications for the 2010 -
2011 academic year. Authorization from Saint Joseph College
does not guarantee an award or the value of an award from the college in
question. Awards are totally controlled by the receiving institution. A
list of over 580 participating colleges is available at http://www.tuitionexchange.org/.

placed in a lottery drawing:

Applications, if approved, are for two consecutive semesters
only and are not renewable. • Notice of lottery
results will be sent to applicants by December 4, 2009. •
Recipients of Tuition Exchange Scholarships must submit a new
application for any subsequent award years and are subject to future
lottery drawings.

SAINT JOSEPH COLLEGE’S SCHOOL FOR YOUNG CHILDREN IS NOW
ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR FALL 2010 - DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER
13: The School for Young Children at Saint Joseph College,
located at 238 Steele Road in West Hartford, a nationally-accredited
preschool, is accepting applications for fall 2010. The School for Young
Children operates on a 10-month academic year similar to that of public
schools, as well as an optional 8-week summer camp program (registration
for summer takes place in the spring).
• Applications
for all students will be accepted between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and
5:00 p.m., November 9 - 13, 2009. Please include a $50
application fee payable to Saint Joseph College with all new student
applications. Applications will be entered in a lottery on December 3,
2009. You will be notified of your lottery number by U.S. mail.
• All
applications received after the November 13 deadline will be numbered as
they are received. The application fee for post deadline applications
will be collected when we are able to offer space in the
program.

NOVEMBER 16 THROUGH 20 - CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
WEEK: Saint Joseph College will celebrate its Ninth Annual
International Education Week (IEW) from November 16 - 20, 2009. IEW is a
joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department
of Education that prepares Americans for global awareness, advocacy and
action.
The College's Office
of International Studies and Programs will commemorate International
Education Week on campus with a rich and stimulating week-long schedule
of educational and cultural events. Highlights include: SJC Passport
Day; Zumba fitness demonstration; Burma Action; presentations
on South Africa, Ecuador, El Salvador, the war in Afghanistan; a panel
on Human Trafficking; “Henna for Charity;” language luncheon (featuring
Spanish and French cuisine); lectures on migration, world population,
ecology/environmental action and much more!

NOVEMBER 17 THROUGH 19 - SAINT JOSEPH COLLEGE OPEN
ENROLLMENT FOR EMPLOYEE BENEFITS: Please note that open
enrollment at Saint Joseph College will take place from November 17
through November 19. We strongly encourage you to attend any of
the meetings listed below where you will learn about the changes to your
benefits program for 2010. We will be continuing to offer a choice of
three Medical Insurance plans through ConnectiCare, along with Dental
Insurance, Voluntary Life Insurance, and Flexible Spending Accounts
through Principal Financial Group. There will be changes to the premium
costs of the Medical and Dental plans, and there will be changes to the
Medical co-pays/deductibles. All
benefits-eligible employees must re-enroll for benefits for the new
calendar year, even if you are making no changes to your
elections.
All attendees will be entered in a
raffle for a $75 gift card to the restaurant of their choice! The Office

SPONSORED BY THE OFFICE OF DIVERSITY INITIATIVES, HEALTH SERVICES AND
DIVERSITY IN ACTION: In 1995, Maria Davis was diagnosed HIV
positive. Three years later, she was hospitalized and was so ill that
her family expected her to die - but Maria would not give up. Along with
the help of breakthrough medicines, she fought her way back; today,
Maria is infused with hope, a strong love for life and the need to speak
out to young people about HIV and AIDS. Join us for this inspiring

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23 - NIGHTINGALE LECTURE FEATURES
AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR SUZANNE GORDON: The Saint Joseph College
Department of Nursing in collaboration with The Honor Society of Nursing
- Sigma Theta Tau International (Iota Upsilon Chapter at large) will
present the Nightingale Lecture featuring Suzanne Gordon, award-winning
journalist and author. Ms. Gordon is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at
the University of California, San Francisco, School of Nursing, and a
Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing. Ms.
Gordon holds a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and did
graduate work at the Johns Hopkins University. For over 20 years, she
has observed nurses and other caregivers in hospitals and health care
institutions across the country; she writes about care giving and health
care reform issues. The author of six books, Ms. Gordon’s latest title
is Safety in Numbers: Nurse-to-Patient Ratios and the Future of
Health Care, written with John Buchanan and Tanya Bretherton
(Cornell University Press, 2008). Her upcoming Nightingale Lecture at
Saint Joseph College is entitled, “Chicken Soup Isn’t Enough: Strategies
to Advance Professional Needs and Quality Patient Care.” Join us
on Monday, November 23 at 7:00 p.m. in The Bruyette Athenaeum’s Hoffman
