Day 1

Bellwork:

Students will be provided a diagram of the food pyramid and asked to fill in each section in with the appropriate label (vegetable, fruit, grain, milk, meat) and color in each section. An example of the pyramid will be posted at the front of the computer lab.  (10 minutes)

Lesson Procedure

Initiation with Students:

Hook to lesson – “Today we are going on an adventure. This adventure could take you through pyramids, around a racetrack, on a boat, through a maze or on a picnic. You get to choose. Are you ready?”

Explanation of Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to identify nutrient-rich foods
  2. Students will be able to know what food choices to make to ensure a nutritious meal or snack.
  3. Students will be able to understand what nutritious foods contain in the way of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients and what they do for your health and body.

Development of Lesson

  1. Students will enter computer lab and asked to pick up a DO NOW worksheet. They will have 10 minutes to complete.
  2. Teacher will review DO NOW and share answers. Students will be instructed to put worksheet in their nutrition folder for future reference.
  3. Teacher will introduce Nutritionexplorations.com to students by displaying the website up on the SmartBoard at front of room. Teacher will click on each link located at the top of the screen and explain to students what the goal is for each section and what they can learn as they explore the areas.
  4. Students will then be asked to log on to the website and spend 5 minutes exploring in whatever areas they want.
  5. Teacher will then direct students to find the following activity: Fueled for Fun. Students are to raise the flag on their monitor when they have found it. They will be instructed not to go past the first screen.
  6. Teacher will pair students up into teams of two. Each team will be a character that runs the race - Billy and his competitor Sophia. Students will start the activity and record their times on the whiteboard at the front of the computer lab.
  7. After each pair of students has raced once, teacher will draw attention back to front of room and ask students to get out their nutrition journal.
  8. The eight students with shortest race time will be asked tell what nutrient rich foods they selected for Billy or Sophia and why those choices helped them to win the race.

Closure

Teacher will ask students to recap what they have learned during Fueled for Fun. Students will be asked to then write what foods they learned are nutrient rich and why (provides energy, vitamins, etc…).

Homework

Students will keep a diary of what they eat for dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow. Students will chart these foods on the food pyramid.

Assessment Strategy

ü       Students will be able to name a nutrient rich food from each food group in a quiz at end of unit.

ü       Students will be able to make the connection those nutrients rich foods provide energy and why they are good to eat by diagramming on a food worksheet (to be presented on Lesson 5 in this unit).
