Introduction

The following lesson is designed to be used with the Print Gallery section in the Community Construction Kit. The Print Gallery is a library of photographs, which provides students with an auditory description of each dwelling pictured from a particular era. Through interacting with the Print Gallery, students are introduced to details of famous landmarks.

The lesson is geared for a heterogeneously grouped fifth-grade class and coincides with a unit of study on Colonial America. The lesson allows students to work in pairs and individually. Each pair of students will have 30 minutes to use the computer. This lesson should be taught after teaching a whole group lesson that familiarizes students with the program.

Learning Objectives

The students will be able to:

Identify two different dwellings during the Colonial times
Compare and contrast two dwellings
Write a friendly letter to another Colonist explaining the two dwellings
Construct a bar graph using the various dwellings chosen

Instructional Materials:

Software: Community Construction Kit by Tom Snyder Productions

Hardware requirements: computer and printer

Venn diagram handouts

paper

graph paper

Lesson Sequence:

Review the software with the entire class and explain what they will be doing.

Ask students to select the Print Gallery icon and click on it.

Have students view several notable dwellings from the Colonial era, and then select two, which they will compare and contrast.

The Venn diagram will be based on their observations as well as the audio description in the software.

Once each student has completed a Venn diagram, they will play the role of a Colonist and write a friendly letter to another Colonist explaining what he/she learned.

After all of the students have completed their Venn diagram and friendly letter, the entire class will create a class bar graph based on the dwellings selected.

Evaluation or Assessment:

Student learning will be assessed based on handouts. I will assess Student Venn diagrams and friendly letters.
