Introduction:
This lesson plan is intended for students in the third grade but could be adapted to other grades, by focusing on curriculum content. The content in this lesson is social studies based. The students have been studying the history of their town, Middletown, Connecticut. Students will choose one section of the book, A Brightly Colored Past: African-Americans in our Community’s History. Each student will fill the supplied storyboard giving three main ideas they learned from the book and two supporting details. Each student will then make one slide with Kid Pix Studio Deluxe. The individual slides will be incorporated into one class slide show.
The software used for this lesson is Kid Pix Studio Deluxe. This program allows students to create pictures that can be imbedded into slide shows. The teacher would need to use a LCD projection system to demonstrate how to use the program to make slides. The students would use time in the computer lab to create their projects. Time allotment for this slide making activity would probably be one to two sessions in half-hour blocks in a computer lab. Additional adult assistance would be required, such as using a paraprofessional, teacher's aide or a parent. It is assumed that students are already familiar with making pictures with text using Kid Pix Studio Deluxe.

Lesson:
Initiation:
Well, we have been working hard learning all about Middletown's history. Can somebody tell me the name of the Middletown general who was a Civil War Hero? Great job. Yesterday I asked you to fill out a story board listing three things you had learned about while reading A Brightly Colored Past. Today, you will begin making a slide show from what you have learned. This is sort of like doing a short report only I think you will find it a lot more exciting! Remember we have used Kid Pix before to make exciting animated pictures? Let me demonstrate how to use this program to make slide shows from your pictures.
Body:
Closure:
You have done an excellent job of creating a slide show! I am so proud of how much you have learned. I will set up the slide show for your parents on Parent Night and also have our principal come down and take a look at your wonderful production. Tomorrow, we will continue with our Middletown unit and begin to learn about some important Middletown landmarks.
Evaluation:
Students will be assessed on their completion of the story board, listing three main ideas with two supporting details for each. Critical thinking skills will be determined by reading students statements on why they feel the concepts are important. Students will also be assessed on their ability to create a slide suitable to be inserted in the group slide show. The slide must include one main idea and two supporting details. Students will be assigned a check or check plus for their efforts.
