Middle School Workshop 6th – 8th Grade Algebra

       Software Lesson Plan (8th Grade Mathematics)

Introduction:

 

Middle School Workshop 6th to 8th Grade Algebra provides students within eighth grade a thorough review of algebraic topics.  The program begins by displaying a television screen situated in the middle of an internet café.  The student will proceed through an interactive lesson on the topic of Percents.  This topic has been discussed the two previous days.  This lesson, which takes place in the computer lab, will act as a review.  The students will have the opportunity to receive bonus points on their upcoming quiz by playing the game Death by Algebra

 

 

Learning Objectives:

 

Students will be able to:

 

  • Solve percent problems
  • Use equations to solve problems involving percents
  • Find percent of change
  • Use equations to solve problems involving percent of change

 

 

Instructional Materials:

 

  • Middle School Workshop 6th to 8th Grade Algebra Software
  • Computer
  • Overhead projector screen
  • Overhead projector
  • Whiteboard
  • Whiteboard markers
  • Notepad and pencil

 

 

Supplement Materials:

 

Lesson Sequence:

 

  • Using the whiteboard, the teacher briefly reviews some examples on how to solve percent and percent of change problems
  • The teacher answers any student questions
  • The teacher explains the main objective of the lesson
  • The teacher hands out the Algebra I Start-up information sheet
  • The teacher briefly discusses Start-up information sheet and guides the students through set-up phase
  • The students begin their interactive Percent lesson
  • The students then take a ten question on-line quiz on Percents
  • The students begin playing the game, Death by Algebra
  • Once finished with the game, Death by Algebra, the student’s score is recorded by the teacher.

 

Closure:

 

  • There is a class discussion regarding the effectiveness of the software
  • The teacher writes down any ideas for improving this lesson
  • The teacher answers any other student questions on the topic Percents 

 

Evaluation or Assessment:

 

  • Students will be informally evaluated on class participation and behavior
  • Students will be able to receive up to three bonus points on their upcoming Percent quiz, based on the following scoring:  

 

10,000 points or higher – student will receive three bonus points

5,000 – 9,999 points – student will receive two bonus points

1- 4,999 points – student will receive one bonus point

 

Note:  Student may still receive one bonus point based on class participation and effort
