Software Description
This software is an example of Interactive Group Software. The software offers two realistic research cases about the Indonesian rainforests. It combines engaging scientific content with effective problem solving and critical thinking. The focus is on plant biology and tropical rainforests. Members of a team play the roles of different scientific experts – ecologist, ethnobotanist, plant chemist, and taxonomist. Students must watch video portions from the software, read in booklets provided and use worksheets to record their findings.
Accuracy Content
The content of the video presentation is truly realistic. It gives students a better understanding of the content when they can see what a real rainforest looks like. They can identify with the culture. They hear the sounds of the rainforest. It gives them a broader understanding of the rainforest environment and an understanding of the different roles scientists play as the ecosystem is changing.
Technical Quality
The software is very easy to install. It also requires that you install Quick Time if you don’t already have it on your machine in order to view the movie portion. It is meant to be run by the teacher. It is very easy to pause the video at any time or to go back a few frames if necessary. The screens the students have to read are very clear in the directions the students are suppose to follow.
Use of Technology
Use of multimedia enhances the experience for the students. The technology engages students to become members of an interdependent team, learn how to work well with others, and enhance their ability to communicate both information and opinions. It broadens their minds past their own environment. It allows them to view life in another part of the world.
Role of Students
The students are involved in a cooperative learning environment. They have
to work together to solve a group problem. Students have to listen to take
appropriate notes. The program actively involves students through scientific
analysis, decision-making, and teamwork in botanical and ecological research in
the rainforests of
Role of Teacher
The teacher runs the lesson. The teacher sets the tone for the activity. The teacher acts as a facilitator, coach, and evaluator. The teacher controls the diversity of groups. The teacher controls the pace of the activity. The software is easy to manipulate and may be easily reviewed if a part needs to be seen again. The teacher decides based on the group how much prior knowledge the class may need to know to successfully complete the activities. The teacher must participate in some of the assessment because some answers need to be read by the teacher.
Classroom Usage
The program is designed to be used by the whole class at the same time. A large screen would be needed for viewing by the whole class. Students need to be in groups of four and you may have up to eight groups. Each case takes 1 to 2 weeks of class time.
Rainforest Researcher gives you a tool you can build a whole unit from. The program includes support materials, which allow you to extend the scientific content of your curriculum. The experiments and extension activities give your students hands-on activities related to ecology, plant chemistry, taxonomy and ethnobotany.
Overall Rating: 9 out of 10
Explanation of Rating
This software deserves a high rating because of it promotes a rich cooperative learning environment. It correlates with the National Science Education Standards and addresses Science as Inquiry, Life Science, and Science in Personal and Social Perspectives. The software if very flexible and can be molded to fit the needs of all students.
