Background Story

Dead Man Walking , written by Sister Helen Prejean, a Roman Catholic nun of the Susters of Saint Joseph Of Medaille.  Sr. Helen began her fight against the death penalty accidentally by starting a correspondence in 1981 with a convicted murderer, Patrick Sonnier,  sentenced to death by electrocution. She visited him  in prison in New Orleans, Louisana. Over time, she came to be his spiritual adviser.  In the process of working with Sonnier, she gained insights into the death penalty and became an outspoken critic of it.  As for the victims, Sister Helen founded Survive, a counselling support group for victims’ families.
