Grading and Course Policies

  • Attendance and course participation: 30%
  • Writing assignments: 25%
  • Quizzes and other evaluations: 25%
  • Final project: 20%

Final grades are calculated by adding points to derive a final total out of a possible 100 points.  Numerical grades are converted to letter grades for transcripts using the cutoffs found the Saint Joseph Catalog: 100-93 = A | 92-90 = A- | 89-87 = B+  | 86-83 = B | 82-80 = B- | 79-77 = C+  |  76-73 = C | 72-70 = C- | 69-67 = D+ | 66-63 = D  | 62-60 = D- | Less than 60 = F   (See p. 32.)

Attendance and Participation (30% or 30 points)

Attendance: 10%; participation: 20%.

  • Attendance:

In addition to attending all classes, students are required to attend 3 campus events.  Missing one class or event is permitted; beyond that, one point is subtracted for every missed class or event.

  • Class participation:

Class participation includes contributions to class discussions and group projects, the course binder, film notes, oral presentations, and in-class writings.   To further demonstrate participation, students can bring to class film reviews and similar information for sharing.

Ø      Class discussions, group participation, in-class writings: 5%

Ø      Oral presentations: 5%

Ø      Film notes and class binders: 20%

Writing Assignments (25% or 25 points)

The critical analyses will involve peer reviews and conferring with me as well as writing tutors.

Ø      Critical Analysis: Mystic Pizza and Good Will Hunting 10%

Ø      Critical Analysis: She’s Come Undone and Girl Interrupted 10%

Ø      Short, at-home writing assignments:  5%

Policy on Late Writing Assignments

A critical component of First-Year Seminar is adjusting to college life.  Thus, late work is discouraged.  As in most college courses, a penalty results when work is submitted late.  For major papers, one point is subtracted for each day late, and work is not accepted after a week.  Students can submit papers early for a grade if they would like to rewrite papers for higher grades.

Quizzes and Other Evaluations (25 % or 25 points)

Review sheets and in-class reviews help student prepare for major quizzes.  Major quizzes focus on cinematic effects and applying them to films studied.

Ø      2 major, full-period quizzes: 20% (each 10%)

Ø      2 short quizzes: collectively: 5%

Policy on Absence for a Quiz

To make-up a quiz in cases of absence, a written note documenting a legitimate reason for missing class must be provided.  An alternate quiz will be administered.  Make-ups should be addressed within one week of return to class.

Final Project (20 % or 20 points)

This project involves presenting a segment of a film to the class and teaching the class about cinematic techniques, the coming-of-age theme and the use of setting.  The project includes (1) design of multimedia, an appropriate handout, or a poster; (2) a written paper, and (3) an oral presentation.  Students can do the oral presentation alone, with a partner, or in a small group.
