Grading
Final grades are
calculated on the four categories above.
Points are accrued in each of these four categories and added to
determine the final course grade on the 100-point scale. Final letter grades are determined using
cutoff points found in the Saint Joseph
Catalog: 100-93 = A | 92-90 = A- | 89-87 = B+ | 86-83 = B | 82-80 = B- | 79-77 = C+ |
76-73 = C | 72-70 = C- | 69-67 = D+ | 66-63 = D | 62-60 = D - | Less than 60 = F Attendance Policy An absence entails missing 75 minutes of course
work. All absences count against the final grade. One point will be subtracted from the final
grade for each class missed. For example,
a final course average of 91 will become 88 if three classes are missed,
lowering the letter grade from A- to B+. Missing portions of class will
accumulate as absences. There is no need to present an excuse or letter
regarding an absence. It is assumed that any absence is attributable to
sickness, personal emergency, or the like.
If an illness results in an extended absence, the student should
discuss her academic progress with me. In addition to regularly scheduled classes,
students are expected to attend two extracurricular activities, including one
that relates to the FYS common reading. Final Word and Grade Contracts If a student believes her course grades do not
reflect her engagement, effort, and quality of work, it is important to
discuss the matter with me to reach a clearer understanding of grading
policies and course expectations.
Following course policies and assignments, as outlined, will help
ensure a student receives the grade that she desires in the course. Given that students are the determiners of their
grades, a grading contract is available for any student who would like to
sign it at the beginning of the semester.
The contract will assist a student
in setting achievable goals for herself. |
