Journals

Journals are quick responses to specific topics and serve to generate writing without worrying about revising or editing. These are one-draft pieces. Your journal is an excellent place for you to collect ideas for writing projects in this course.

Individual journal entries are not graded. Volume (2,000 words for the semester) is all that counts. I will offer writing prompts throughout the course. Some journal responses will be written during class, and some done for homework. Approximately two (2) or three (3) weekly journal entries, each about fifty (50) words, would ensure meeting the final word-count requirement. Of course, feel free to go over the limit. Most of the journal topics relate to course writing assignments, and some can serve as prewriting exercises for upcoming assignments. Because individual journal entries are not graded, you need not be concerned with sticking directly to the given instructions. Feel free to go off on tangents. Remember what is important is quantity, generating lots of writing.

I am experimenting this semester by having the class do their journals on the computer. I will show you how to set up a specific computer folder to maintain and save all of your journal entries on the U drive of the College network as well as remind you to keep a backup on a floppy disk. For a file name, you can use the date of the entry. It is best not to put any spaces in file names. You can send me your journal entries via computer or give me your backup disk. Certainly if you want to print and collect your entries, you can. You can also do your journal in a regular book if you prefer. Just be sure to bring the book to class as needed and on dates that journals will be submitted.
