Library Visit Project

Use your time in the library to complete the following exercises. Follow through with the topic that you used for your commentary, though you may find that you have to narrow the topic some to make it more workable for doing research.

 Part One: Online Database Search for Newspaper Articles

Follow the directions provided by the reference librarian to use databases for locating and printing newspaper articles. Stick with reputable newspapers such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Hartford Courant. Locate 5-8 articles, and place them in the colored file folder provided.

 Part Two: Online Database Search for Magazine Articles

Follow the directions provided by the reference librarian to use databases for locating magazine articles. Some of the articles will be available on online and others will be on microfilm or in paper format. Collect articles in at least two formats. Print microfilm articles, and copy paper articles. Locate 4-5 articles, and place them in your folder.

 Part Three: Locating a Book

Locate at least one book in the college library on your topic and sign out the book. Only a part of the book need be on your topic. Bring the book to class Nov. 7.

 Part Four: Interlibrary Loan

Pick up an Interlibrary Loan Form and insert it in your folder.

 Part Five: Accessing Library's Online Databases from Off Site

List the steps for accessing the college's online databases when you not in the library:

 

 

 Part Six: Getting to Know the Reference Librarians

The college has two reference librarians. Find out their names, telephone numbers, and email addresses, and write the information here.

Please come to class on Nov. 7 with your collected articles and book. It is expected that you will need to spend time beyond the workshop to finish this assignment. I will be off campus on Nov. 1-3.. Please do not email or call with questions. Instead, work with the reference librarians who can help you use the library effectively.
