Introduction
This is a computer-based lesson that utilizes Kid Pix Deluxe, a program by Broderbund. Once familiar with this program through previous lessons on its components, students can create slide shows using graphics, sound and text. A unit on fairy tales is taught in the third grade at my school. This lesson concludes the unit by incorporating a computer-based project.
This lesson works best with use of a computer lab, which enables all students to work at once. If a computer lab is not available, students may work one at a time on the classroom computer.
Group: Grade 3
Subject Area: Reading and Language Arts (Fairy Tale Unit)
Time: At least two 45-60 minute class periods.
Materials: fairy tales, storyboards, pencils, computers, Kid Pix Deluxe software, LCD.
Objective:
After reading a fairytale, each student will create a slide show using Kid Pix Deluxe to write and illustrate the main events of the story.
Initiation and Purpose:
We now have learned the characteristics of fairy tales, read many fairy tales independently, and have completed fairy tale activity packets during our fairy tale unit. Today we will begin a fairy tale project that will be completed on the computer using Kid Pix Deluxe. For the past two weeks we have been using and learning about the different components of the program. Now we are ready to create slide shows of our favorite fairy tales. Before we can move to the computers, each of you must choose a fairy tale, read it, and fill out a plan for your slide show on a storyboard. Your slide show must have a title page and the most important story events typed and illustrated in sequence. Creating a story event slide show using Kid Pix Deluxe will help you to better understand the fairytale you have read, and will enable you to present your knowledge of the important story events to the class in a creative way.
Lesson Development:
Closure:
Students present their fairy tale slide shows to the class using a LCD. The teacher summarizes the lesson and its purpose.
Evaluation:
Each slide show must begin with a title page and include the main events of the fairy tale chosen. Each event must be typed and illustrated on an individual slide and sequenced in the correct order. (Slide shows will be saved and evaluated from disks.)
