Introduction:
Overview of Plan-This lesson is intended for a first grade. The class is working on a literature focus unit based on Arthur’s Teacher Trouble. The purpose of this language arts lesson is to strengthen observation skills. The lesson is being used in a setting with one computer in the classroom. Students will work in groups of three and be scheduled for a ten- minute time period on the computer. The other children will work on a writing lesson related to the book. The teacher will explain the project to the entire class and be available to the children at the computer as needed. All the children have listened to the story on the computer and have had a chance to interact with the software during center time.
Overview of Software-The story on the software is Arthur’s Teacher Trouble, which is the literature focus for the week. The software has two modes, Read To Me and Let Me Play. The lesson will use the Let Me Play mode that allows the user to click on objects in the story. The objects then do a variety of different actions.
Learning Objectives:
The students will be able to:
· Strengthen observation skills
· Record observations through writing
· Work cooperatively in groups of threes
Instructional Materials:
computer with installed software, copies of the blackline masters from pp. 30-33 of the Teacher
Resource Manual for each child (each blackline master is a copy of a page in the story)
Lesson Sequence:
·
Using page one of Let Me Play the teacher introduces the lesson to the whole class.·
Invite three children to the computer to demonstrate.·
Teacher assigns one student to tell the next student what object to click on, the next follows directions by clicking on the area of the page s/he is told, another to describe the action of the object (what they observe). Repeat as many times as needed for everyone to have a turn.·
The class is divided into groups of three and each child is assigned one of the previous roles.·
Each child is given a copy of the blackline master of the group’s assigned page.·
Groups rotate in 10-minute intervals on the computer.·
The groups will explore their page by clicking on different objects and fulfilling their assigned role. (Example: Child 1-"Click on the bell." Child 2 clicks on the bell. Child 3- "The bell rang.") When they have decided on an action they like, they circle the object on their blackline copy and describe it in the space provided.·
Children share their results with the rest of class by reading their sentences and showing the object circled.Assessment:
The children will hand in their assignment. The teacher will check for student's observation skills through their ability to describe the action in written words. The teacher will watch for student cooperation while each group is working at the computer and note success and difficulties.
