Introduction:

Grade Level: 10-12 grade

Subject: Interior Design- Family and Consumer Science

Lesson: My First Home

Time: 2 class periods, 45 minutes in length

Location: Computer lab

This lesson is called “My First Home” and will include the challenges and rewards of owning your first home.  Students will use the Building Homes of Our Own software program that has been installed in the school’s computer lab to engage in the hands- on experience of building and selling a home. They will also read an article for homework from The Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition that will discuss the costs of buying their first home.  Both of these activities should provide the students with an accurate interpretation of home buying.

Building Homes of Our own is an educational simulation game that presents a macro view of the home building process from site selection to the final sale.  Students collect information, solve problems, and make choices concerning their home.  They must then successfully sell their home to a potential buyer.

For this lesson certain criteria will be addressed and students must meet all of the goals in order to successfully complete the lesson.
