Slide Examples:
Fractions,
Decimals, and Percents
You can use a PowerPoint slide to show the
relationships between fractions, decimals and percents. Students will have a better understanding of
both the numerical and visual representations. See the sample slide.
Geometry
PowerPoint can be very helpful in
identifying geometric figures. You can
display a shape and ask the class to describe some characteristics. The characteristics can be adaptable to any
grade level. The vocabulary can be
altered to comply with the curriculum requirements for elementary, middle,
and high school classes. See the sample slide for
a middle school class.
Statistics
You can combine Microsoft Excel
with PowerPoint to show students different aspects of statistics. You can create a graph to show and explain
what an outlier is in statistics. See
the sample
slide.
Graphing
In order to show students how a
graph should look, PowerPoint slides become a helping aide. As a class lesson or for handouts, students
need to be provided with at least one example of how the characteristics of a
graph are put together. See the sample slide.
You
can also see these slides through at PowerPoint presentation at this link, PowerPoint ideas.
Student Use:
- PowerPoint
presentations can help students organize oral presentations throughout the
school year. The set up of a
slide show allows students to explore a topic and gather details to
describe the topic. Animation
will provide the presentation with order in a timely manner. Since an audience may read ahead on
the slide, students should present one idea at a time. This point is especially important
when dealing with mathematics. In
order to understand how to solve a problem, one must understand each
step. Jumping a few steps ahead
without understanding the previous steps would create a confused and
frustrated student.
- PowerPoint
can also supply an outline for an essay.
This is helpful for students who are writing papers with multiple
paragraphs. Students will be able
to see the similarities between PowerPoint presentations and essays. They first need a topic sentence,
which is the title of the slide.
Secondly, students provide supporting evidence to the topic
sentence, which is the bulleted text in the text box format. Students can apply this to their
English, math, history, and science classes.
Teacher Use:
- Teachers
can use PowerPoint presentations for lessons any time during the school
year. Inserting graphs and
pictures can add to the presentation.
The only advice I would have is to not put too many graphics that
would take the students’ attention away from the lesson. Animation can also help the teacher to
make sure the students are only concentrating on one thing at a time.
- PowerPoint
slides are great for reviews for a test.
The teacher can provide the basic information in class and use
the handout format to give the students for study material at home.
