Website Title: Spanish – Learn it Online (Spaleon)

Introduction

Spanish – Learn it Online (Spaleon) is the website that will be utilized in this lesson. The website can be used with 6-12 graders. Spaleon provides practice in order to conjugate in a variety of tenses and forms. Spaleon has a feature that allows students to check their work and are able to subscribe to the site in order to have a report of their progress.  

 

The lesson will be for students in a Spanish III college level, who are typically sophomores. The course requires students to be comfortable with conjugating in the preterite form. Students have been previously introduced to the preterite tense, however still have difficulty with this particular tense. This lesson will permit students to practice their conjugating skills in individual computers. The timeframe for this lesson will be 57 minutes.

 

Lesson Objective

  • Students will be able to conjugate the preterite, including some irregular verbs.

 

Instructional Materials

  • Smartboard
  • Classroom computer laboratory (each student at their own computer station)
  • Assessment worksheet
  • Pen or pencil

 

Lesson Sequence

 

            Hook: (5 minutes)

Students will be asked to say something that they did last night in English. Students will then be asked “What tense would you need to use in order to say it in Spanish?” (Student would have previously seen the preterite tense in Spanish II)

 

            Body:

  • Students will be asked to sign up with Spaleon’s personal page to keep track of their work. Students will need to create a username and a password in order to create a page. Students will print the result page at the end of the lesson. (4 minutes)

 

  • On the Smartboard students will be shown how to conjugate the regular –ar, -er,

-ir preterite tense in Spanish. (4 minutes)

 

  • Students will individually practice conjugating the regular verbs on their own computer in Spaleon. (10 minutes)

 

  • On the Smartboard students will be shown how to conjugate the irregular preterite tense in Spanish (decir, traer, hacer, poner, poder, querer, dormir, estar, tener, dar, ver, leer, ir, ser, and morir, and -car, -gar, -zar verbs). (7 minutes)

 

  • Students will individually practice conjugating the irregular verbs on their own computer in Spaleon. (17 minutes)

 

Assessment (closure)

Students will individually complete a worksheet with a variety of regular and irregular verbs in the preterite in Spanish (Assessment worksheet). (9 minutes)

 

Supplemental Materials

For homework, students will need to create 15 sentences about what they did last night in

Spanish using a variety of verb the preterite.
