Kid Pix Studio Deluxe Lesson Plan: 3rd grade Created By: Sarah Torchio Introduction: This is a computer based software lesson that utilizes
Kid Pix Studio
Deluxe, a program by Broderbund. After teacher modeling and
guidance with this software program, students can create slide shows (similar
to PowerPoint) using graphics, sound and text. I am using Kid Pix Studio Deluxe with my highest level guided reading group. This group is on a DRA level 40 or 44 in
third grade. They consistently need to
be challenged since they are reading at a fourth grade level. Students will participate in this lesson
and incorporate a computer-based project after they read The Sign of the
Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare. I have 6 computers in my classroom and individual laptops
are available upon request, which enables all students to work at once.
Students are encouraged to help each other and brainstorm different ideas for
their slide. Grade and Subject Area: Grades 3-5 Time: 45 minutes Materials: Ø The Sign of the Beaver by
Elizabeth George Speare Ø Kid Pix Studio Deluxe software program Ø Computer for each student (or students can take turns at the
computer if necessary) Ø Pencil Ø Paper Ø Scene selection handout for students Lesson Objective: After reading The
Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare,
students will use Kid Pix Studio Deluxe
to draw a picture of a scene from the story.
Students must write a detailed description to accompany their scene.
Students will write at least 2 paragraphs with 6 or more details to describe
their scene. Initiation: Ø You have just finished reading The Sign of the Beaver by
Elizabeth George Speare! There are many important scenes that occur
in this story. You’re job is going to
be to select one scene from the handout titled “Topics for
filmstrip scenes”. You will then
use Kid Pix Studio Deluxe to illustrate and write about your scene. I would
like you to plan out your ideas on paper first. You may work together to brainstorm your
ideas. Please be sure that everyone in
your guided reading group chooses a different scene. I am giving you a
Rubric for grading in
advance so you know exactly how you will be assessed. Lesson Development: ·
Students meet to discuss their scene
selections and brainstorm ideas ·
Students plan their scene and written
description on paper ·
Using Kid
Pix Studio Deluxe students draw a picture of their scene, using as many
details as they can ·
Students write a complete description of their
scene. At least 2 detailed paragraphs
must be written that includes 6 or more details. ·
Students practice reading their description so
they are prepared to share with the class.
Students may practice together and provide feedback for each other. Closure: The teacher will inform the rest of the class
about this guided reading groups project. Students will all present their slides to
the class, and read their descriptions of their scene. Evaluation: The teacher will use the rubric for grading provided to evaluate each student's
progress. The students will be
evaluated on their accuracy of each scene and the details they have provided
in the written description. Sign of the Beaver Filmstrip Project: Student Directions Name ____________________________________________ Step 1: Pick the scene you wish to illustrate from the list provided Step 2: Brainstorm your ideas with your friends in your guided reading
group Step 3: Sketch your scene on paper, and plan your ideas. You may also
wish to write your description and have a friend help revise and edit your
ideas. Step 4: Using Kid Pix Studio
Deluxe, draw a picture of your scene.
Include as many ideas as you can. Step 5: Write a complete description of your scene. This may need to be done on more than one
slide depending on its length. Be as
