Website Description:

Spellingcity is a free online spelling program that helps students study and prepare for spelling tests.  There are links for students, teachers, and parents.  Once students get on this site they are presented with a box that state “start here.”  Students are informed to type in their spelling words and then press “Test Me, Teach Me, or Play a Game.”  After students press “test me” they are taken to another screen where they are tested on the words that they entered.  Once students get on the next screen, there is a voice that says, “Get ready for the test, don’t peek at your list, and begin.”  Students are required to press “say it” and then there is a computer generated voice that say one of the spelling words.  At this point students can type the word that they heard or they can press the “sentence” button to have the word used in a sentence.  After students finish typing their words, they can press the “check me” button and they will see another box showing the words they got correct or incorrect.  At this point, students can choose to retake the entire test or just those words they got incorrect.

If students decide to press “teach me” after typing in their words then they are taken to a screen with a small yellowish box.  Underneath this box is drop box with the first spelling word display.  Students are required to “click to start” at which point they will hear a computer voice saying the word, spelling it and then using the word in a sentence.  Students will continue to click on the drop box or press >> until they finish all their spelling words.  Students can repeat this process if needed.

If students decide to “play a game,” they are taken to another screen with a selection of games.  Students can play games like “match it, unscramble, word search, and alphabetize,” etc.  Each game states how many words are required in order for students to play.  Some games are even printable.  For example, if students choose to play “word search,” they are taken to another screen where they can select level and length of game. Students can also decide if they want the timer on or off.  Students can click on the “solve” button and they can see a solution to the puzzle.  Students can also print off copy of their word search.

 Accuracy of Content:

The accuracy of content on the website is based on whether or not students type the information in correctly.  The website does have a warning if it does not recognize a particular word and it will ask students if they entered the word correctly.  The site is also case sensitive so students have to make sure that they type in their words the same way when they take the test.  For example, if students use capital letters at the beginning of each word, then they must use capital letters at the beginning of each word when they take the test.

Technical Quality:

The technical quality is excellent because it is easy to navigate.  The directions are clear and easy to follow.  I did not have any problems with links or hyperlinks.  Once I clicked on a link, I was immediately taken to the next step without any problems.  The audio was also clear and easy to understand.

Use of Technology:

This site makes good use of technology to promote learning because students are in control.  Students can take words on a page and turn them into something that is interactive and fun.  This site gives students opportunities to simulate a real spelling test because they are hearing the words being pronounced.  This site helps students prepare for a spelling test without having to ask someone to test them.

Role of Students:

Students are empowered by using this site because they determine what path they want to choose.  In addition, students do not need any assistance because they can work at their own pace and comfort level.

Role of Teacher:

Teachers can create a list of spelling words for students to access from home.  Teachers have the ability to create a weekly or yearly list.  Teachers can then put a link on their school or class website so that students can practice their spelling words in the comfort of their home.

Classroom Usage:

In a classroom setting this website is more effective if it is used independently. By using this website each student is testing his/her ability to memorize and spell different words.  Students with special needs would benefit greatly from this site because there is a visual and audio component.

Critical Summary:

Overall, I think this website’s educational strengths are very good for what it was designed for.  This site is supposed to help students prepare for their spelling tests in a fun and interactive way which is exactly what it does.

Overall Rating: 8

Explanation of Rating:    I gave this site an 8 because it only serves one purpose which is spelling.  Students can only play with their spelling words.  However, I do like the fact that parents can gain access to the spelling words so that they can help their children and take an active part in the education process.
