REACH OUT AND READ

The School for Young Children has developed an intergenerational program with sixteen senior citizens from nearby residences and communities. R.O.A.R. readers spend one hour in the same classroom each week. Throughout the year friendships and bonds are made truly benefiting all ages. Through successful intergenerational programs, children and older people interact with one another establishing caring relationships vital for the continuity of all cultures.

To promote caring between the generations and to enable children to think more positively about their own aging and the elderly, contact between old and young must be pleasurable, intimate and rewarding for both groups. The time spent together should be meaningful, making use of the children's interest and the elder's skills and talents.

In addition to R.O.A.R., The School for Young Children participates in intergenerational programs off-site. Classrooms travel to nearby Senior Living residences twice a month. These programs create ties with our community. Seniors and young children both gain a broader per-spective of change and growth. Historical and cultural differences are shared while empathy and sensitivity for each other is heightened.

What's happening with R.O.A.R.?

Room 7 will be continuing their Friday Friends program with the residents of the McAuley.

Room 2 will be visiting Saint Mary's Home twice a month starting October 1st. Their first visit will include a show of sled dogs brought in by one of their staff members. Children will be given the opportunity to have a ride on a wheeled rig pulled by the dogs.

The ROAR program will be starting the last week in October. Our first meeting for ROAR volunteers to discuss the program will be on Thursday, October 16th.
