GUIDELINES FOR KEEPING YOUR CHILD HOME DUE TO ILLNESS

  1. We realize that it is sometimes difficult for parents to keep a child home from school but it is in the best interest of everyone if we can all cooperate to help keep the school as "healthy" as possible.
  2. The School for Young children uses the following guidelines for the exclusion of children from the program. There are three general guidelines for keeping your child home from school:
    • if the illness prevents your child from participating comfortably in the program activities;
    • if your child needs Motrin or Tylenol to contain a fever;
    • or the illness results in a greater need than the staff can provide without compromising the health and safety of the other children, then the child needs to stay home.
  3. To prevent the spread of infectious disease within the school, the teaching staff with the help of the housekeeping staff maintains a diligent cleaning routine to provide a sanitary, hygienic environment. In addition, teachers help children in developing sound health habits by encouraging hand washing and the use of disposable tissues.

    Parents can help by keeping sick children at home. Children who have had a stomach virus or other viral illnesses are required to remain at home. Children who appear to be in the initial stages of an upper respiratory infection as evidenced by excessive sneezing, coughing, and nasal discharge are requested to remain at home until the severity of these symptoms has diminished.

    Please notify the school by 9:00 a.m. if your child will be absent due to illness. Identifying the illness will also help the staff alert the other parents about the possibilities of contagion and identifying symptoms.

    If a child becomes ill at school, the child will be temporarily isolated within sight and hearing of a caring adult while notification of a parent is being made. If either parent cannot be reached, the emergency contact person listed on your child's Emergency Contact Form will be contacted and will be requested to come for the child. Once a parent or caregiver has been contacted, the child needs to be picked up within 1/2 hour. If the child is not picked up within 1/2 hour, the next person on the emergency contact list will be called to pick up the ill child.

Please help us keep the children safe and healthy. If you know your child has an illness, please contact the school so we can take any necessary precautions. Thank you for your help!
