About the keynote speaker:

Sherri Griffin, Ph.D., has been a professor of early childhood education at Central Methodist University in Fayette Missouri since 1986. In addition she has taught preschool through third graders in a rural, parent cooperative since 1984.

In 1984 Dr. Griffin authored Conservation Seeds, a curriculum guide for teaching young children about nature and conservation for the Missouri Department of Conservation. This publication is distributed free to Missouri early childhood educators. Dr. Griffin updated this guide in 2001 and it was published for national distribution as My Big World of Wonder: Activities for learning about nature and using natural resources wisely by Redleaf Press in 2004.

Dr. Griffin’s most intense interest is helping children and families explore the natural world in a meaningful way. She believes early exposure to habitats in our living spaces fosters conservation ethic. She is continually exploring methods for bringing families together to enjoy and experience nature then documenting and reflecting upon that experience.

Exploring our Natural Resources with our Natural Resources

Nature and conservation experiences during the early childhood years shape attitudes concerning the environment as children develop o into decision making adults. Teachers need to consciously approach sharing nature with children and be aware of their own attitudes and practices regarding natural resources. Dr. Griffin will discuss conservation and how to foster conservation ethic in young children and their grown-up friends.
