TOILET TRAINING POLICY

Toilet training can be a difficult developmental issue, and we want to be as supportive of parents efforts as possible. However, we need to have a clear policy in place that allows us to meet our licensing regulations. We are not licensed for infants and toddlers, thus we do not have changing facilities that meet state requirements for diapering. Therefore we have developed the following guidelines.

  • Children must be toilet trained to attend the School for Young Children. Specifically, they must be able to recognize independently when they need to go to the bathroom and be able to sit on the potty without help.
  • The first few weeks of school can be overwhelming for any child. Even children who have been trained a long time suffer occasional lapses when they are engrossed in an activity, or are overtired, excited, or in new surroundings. We realize that an occasional accident may occur. Please be sure to provide an extra set of clothing for your child.
  • All children are observed by their teachers for the first three weeks of school to assess whether or not children are trained. If a child does not appear to be trained, the Director will call for a conference with the parents to discuss the matter. This year we will wait until October 15 for children before conferencing. If by then, the child has not shown progress toward toileting success, the Director will need to make a decision about the child continuing in the program.

  • If a child leaves the program because of toilet training issues, parents can choose to continue paying tuition and hold the spot until the child is trained, or they may drop the spot and receive a partial refund on tuition. We will remain in contact with the family in case another spot opens later in the year after the child is trained.
